Kickoff meeting: The kickoff meeting for the Ghana Climate University Network was held on 18.01.2024-19.01.2024 via ZOOM online meeting (Hybrid). The meeting aimed to bring together key stakeholders and collaborators to officially launch the network, discuss its objectives, and outline the roadmap for future activities.
Meeting with EU project officer: The Project Officer of the European Union convened with the Ghana Climate University Network (GCUN) coordinator and partners for a virtual meeting via Team Meeting. The meeting took place on the 26th of February 2024, at 3 pm (Finland time) to address various project-related matters.
GCUN Project Coordinator Engages Ghanaian Partners During Visit to Ghana: During the week of March 5th to March 11th, 2024, Professor Frank Berninger, the project coordinator of GCUN, engaged in a series of fruitful meetings with esteemed Ghanaian partners including KNUST, UCC, and CIKOD in Ghana. One of the key outcomes of these discussions was the formation of a startup business selection committee. This committee will be tasked with selecting projects aligned with climate-smart agriculture and initiatives that contribute to the adaptation and mitigation of climate change within the Natural Resource Sector.
Additionally, the meetings involved detailed deliberations on enhancing the internship program. The aim is to provide students with the necessary professional skills while ensuring clearly defined objectives and improved supervision. As a result, there is now a pressing need for a register of companies willing to participate in this program and to offer internship positions to our students.

EU Networking Event in Ghana 20.05.2024
Our GCUN project partners from Ghana participated in an EU Networking event on May 20, 2024. The event included representatives from universities, alumni of mobility programs, associations, key stakeholders, and EU partners in education (both national and international), including EU member states. The objective of the event was to promote collaboration in education, encourage studying in Europe, and facilitate mobility across Africa. Additionally, it aimed to highlight the significant success of the Europe-Ghana partnership in education and skills development.
Sustainability Science Day in Finland, 10.06.2024
Professor Frank Berninger, the project coordinator of GCUN, was a speaker at the 2024 Sustainability Science and Innovation event. This event was a collaboration between the Sustainability Research and Innovation Congress (SRI) and Finland’s Sustainability Science Days (SSD). Held in a hybrid format at Aalto University, Finland, the event focused on the theme “From Competition to Synergies? Agroforestry Systems from a Social-Ecological Perspective”. During his presentation and plenary session, Professor Berninger highlighted the GCUN project and discussed the role of updated knowledge in climate change adaptation.
Making Agribusiness Work Course (UCC applicants)
Being part of the Ghana Climate University Network, 7 scholarships are available for (academic or non-academic) staff of UCC that are interested, motivated and qualified to participate in the 8-months blended course: Making Agribusiness Work course.
Urban forestry for climate change course started on 02.09.2024 at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Ghana
Urban Forestry (UF) is strongly seen as a practical tool for addressing the impact of climate change on the urban environment and improving ecosystem health. A total of 126 applicants applied to enroll in the Urban Forestry for Climate Change course, indicating high demand among students for this program.
Focus on the Global South: EDUFI Programmes’ Coordinators’ Meeting 25-26 September 2024
GCUN project Coordinator Prof. Frank Berninger joined Finnish Erasmus+ Capacity building project coordinators and partners meeting on 26.09.2024 at Finnish National Agency for Education (EDUFI), Helsinki.
Meeting Objective was-
- To strengthen connections between Finnish HEI colleagues working with partners from the Global South
- To exchange practices and leverage collective wisdom on project cooperation and implementation, especially emphasizing regional/national cooperation.
- To jointly reflect on educational cooperation progress and ongoing projects in the Global South.

Data Analysis and Teaching Using R course (04.11.2024-08.11.2024)
The 5-day Data Analysis and Teaching Using R course, organized under the Ghana Climate University Network project, was successfully completed with significant achievements in University of Cape Coast. Participants gained hands-on experience in using R for data analysis, covering data visualization and statistical modeling. The training enhanced collaboration and knowledge exchange among junior faculty, researchers, and students.
Scientific Communication (13.11.2024 – 15.11.2024)
The 3-day Scientific Communication course, part of the Ghana Climate University Network project, was successfully completed in University of Cape Coast, equipping participants with essential skills for academic and professional success. The training covered key areas including scientific article writing, developing effective research plans, delivering impactful scientific presentations, crafting professional CVs, and exploring funding opportunities.
